DIVE IN! to the 7th Annual California Seaweed Festival at the Custom House Plaza! This is a free, family-friendly event celebrating the seaweed diversity of California. Join a community of researchers, innovators, artists, and ocean advocates for an exciting day of talks and panels on art, science and sustainability, hands-on activities, seaweed tastings, and live entertainment!

This is a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to learn about seaweed conservation, while celebrating the magnificent biodiversity of the marine ecosystems in Monterey. Also featured are local vendors showcasing their craftsmanship and exhibitors presenting the latest in marine science and technology, as well as photo opportunities with mermaids!

The California Seaweed Festival is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Each year, the festival moves to a different location along the coast in order to craft a unique experience for each community. In March we celebrate Women’s History Month when we highlight diverse women authors. Make sure to look at the displays in your local branch and check out some books.
On March 2, many libraries and schools will celebrate Read Across America Day, a day to celebrate reading which coincides with Theodore Geisel’s birthday. Several branch libraries visit schools to read to children and a few will have Read Across America celebrations. Check MCFL Events Calendar to see what is happening at a branch near you.
It’s Tax Season. All MCFL branches will have a limited supply of IRS 1040 tax forms and instruction booklets. If you need additional forms for your taxes, library staff can help you log onto the IRS website to find the forms you need. Some branches have free tax assistance for those who qualify. The Alliance on Aging is offering tax help at Greenfield, King City and Marina Branch Libraries. The United Way is offering freeVITA Tax Prep services by appointment at the Marina Branch.
Online resources we are promoting in March are eMagazines with Flipster and Libby. With both of these platforms, we have a great collection of eMagazines offering popular titles like Time, Newsweek, Atlantic Monthly and Kiplinger Personal Finance. With Libby, we have an abundant and diverse collection of over 200 eMagazines covering politics, cooking, home and garden or celebrity gossip. Check it out under Books & More, then eAudio, eBooks, eMagazines.
Cesar Chavez was an American Civil Rights leader advocating for the rights and safety of farm workers. The County is celebrating Cesar Chavez Day on March 31. All branch libraries will be closed on Saturday, March 29 in recognition of this holiday. Seaside Branch and the Administrative Offices will be closed on Monday, March 31.
