Archie Visits Yosemite

By Monterey Bay Staff | February 24, 2024

Archie adventured in Yosemite this week! This was our 4th family trip to Yosemite, and Archie’s sister Esme’s first time. The sheer awesomeness doesn’t ever get any less breathtaking. Archie’s grandparents also joined us this trip and it was extra special for the kids to get some quality time with them.

We always stay at Autocamp when we visit Yosemite National Park. It’s located just outside the park in Midpines. Autocamp is our kind of camping because you get the fun and experience of a camping adventure without having to rough it. It’s ideal for camping with small children because all the necessities are provided, we just have to bring food and clothes – and all the accoutrements that are necessary for the menagerie that is our family, course. Archie packed a small suitcase full of stuffed animals.

Archie always has so much fun when we go camping. When we arrived this time, he ran through the airstream checking everything and then emerged shouting, “I’m so into this!”

He loved playing with the camp kitties, stalking the wild turkeys, swimming in the pool, and making s’mores. This was our biggest excursion to date with two kids. Even with the tricky parts, it was such an incredible experience and I know core memories were made.

One day, when the kids are grown, my wife and I will journey to Yosemite, just the two of us, and it will be serene and peaceful and we’ll have all the time to do everything we want. I will remember these semi-chaotic trips when our children were small where we were so busy keeping everyone fed and safe, changing diapers, kissing boo-boos, managing naps, adjusting car seats, and making pit stops…the memory of the stress and anxiety of parenthood will have faded with time, and I’ll just remember how we were a team doing it all together. I’ll be so glad we took all the adventures.

Archie Visits the Monarch Grove Sanctuary in Pacific Grove

By Monterey Bay Staff | February 24, 2024

It’s a beautiful time of year to visit the Monarch Grove Sanctuary.

There’s something poetic about seeing butterflies, symbols of rebirth and transformation, at the start of a new year. We’ve gone several times in the past week to view and appreciate the butterflies. The morning light and the soft scent of the eucalyptus and pine trees is so peaceful. It never gets old.

Many butterflies have been knocked down from their resting places in the treetops by the recent rain and winds. Dozens of them are drying and warming themselves on the ground. The walking path is strewn with recovering butterflies, so tread carefully!

Archie Goes Tidepooling in the Monterey Bay

By Monterey Bay Staff | February 24, 2024

Archie hit the tide pools at Asilomar State Beach this week to participate in the Solstice Sea Star Search!

We searched for sea stars to record returning populations after having been impacted by sea star wasting syndrome as a result of a marine heatwave several years ago. We photographed and recorded the sea stars we found in the iNaturaist app. We didn’t find any sunflower stars, but we did find some bat stars and ochre sea stars. It was fun to feel like marine biologists and go hunting for specimens. Plus, every day at the beach is a good day.

Extreme low tides are happening right now through December 27th! You can join in the statewide search for sea stars. Just download the iNaturalist app, photograph the sea stars you find, and upload them to the app.

Remember to leave the starfish where you find them and do not pull them from their cozy resting places.

Archie Enjoys the Snow at Leland

By Monterey Bay Staff | February 24, 2024

Archie has been asking to play in snow since last summer. We took a 4 hour roadtrip up to Strawberry this week and stayed for a couple nights to make his snow wishes come true. There was a perfect amount of snow, the roads were clear, and the weather was beautiful. At 6,300 ft elevation, it definitely looked like a winter wonderland.

We had a lot of fun with a full day of tubing at Leland Snowplay! We met up with some friends and the kids had a blast together. We definitely made the trip out of love for Archie, because neither of his parents are big fans of the cold or snow. I can enjoy the snow for a couple of days though, as long as I get to drive back home to the beach when it’s over. This was Esme’s first snow experience at 17 months old. She called it “ice” and loved eating it. She was not a fan of wearing snow gear. ❄️

There were a lot of challenging things about this trip (traveling with toddlers is tough) but Esme’s belly laughs tubing down the hill, and Archie’s excitement about the snow and the many times he told us how much fun he was having made it all worth it.

Archie Visits Glorya Jean Tate Skatepark in Marina

By Monterey Bay Staff | February 1, 2024

A friend recently invited us to the Glorya Jean Tate Park in Marina. Archie had a fun time and asked to go again, so I took him after school to burn off some energy on the pump track. I don’t think I’ve ever found the end of his energy! Even when he’s tired from physical activity, he says he has more energy stored in his feet to use. I could sure use some! 😆 🛴 💨

Archie Goes Horseback Riding at Hacienda in Carmel Valley

By Monterey Bay Staff | February 1, 2024

Archie attended the Giddy-Up Gathering at Hacienda Hay & Feed in Carmel Valley this weekend for horse riding with Christy. We were excited for this event because we took Archie horse riding with Christy at her ranch when he was a toddler and it was fun to see her and the horses again. Archie rode Glee and had a great time in the sunshine. This event sold out, so make sure to purchase your tickets online ahead of time for their next gathering! 🐴

We grabbed some Revival Ice Cream afterwards and played with friends. The unusually warm weather today was such a welcome treat!
