York School’s experiential curriculum offers students an education that goes far beyond the walls of a traditional classroom.

As an award-winning, private college-prep school in Monterey, York offers an academically rigorous program in an inclusive, diverse community that fosters bright, kind, curious, and driven students. York’s mission is to transform those students into confident and authentic leaders through experiential learning—an approach that integrates real-world exploration with academic depth.
Known for its excellence in academics and community engagement, York School prepares students not just for college, but for life. By blending immersive, hands-on experiences with foundational classroom learning, York cultivates intellectual curiosity and empowers students to become passionate contributors to their communities. That vision comes to life in programs like the Costa Rica Sustainability curriculum, the Distinguished Scholars Program, and the annual choir performance at New York City’s Lincoln Center.
GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP BEGINS
IN THE CLOUD FOREST
York’s Costa Rica Sustainability Program is a cornerstone of the school’s commitment to cultivating global citizens. Since 2023, the entire tenth-grade class has journeyed to the edge of the Monteverde Cloud Forest for a week of immersive study at the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) campus. This transformative experience—soon to become part of the ninth-grade curriculum—puts students face-to-face with the world’s most pressing environmental challenge: climate change.
What can a small, spirited high school on California’s Central Coast do to address what the World Health Organization has called “the single biggest threat facing humanity”? York’s answer is ambitious: equip students with the knowledge, cross-cultural fluency, and problem-solving skills needed to confront the climate crisis head-on. In Monteverde, students attend classes led by local professors and experts, hike through the biological preserve, zipline through the canopy, learn about sustainability practices, and develop their own research questions and solutions to bring back to their school community.
The program provides students with both a scientific foundation and a renewed sense of hope. In a world saturated with climate doom narratives, the Costa Rica trip instead emphasizes practical solutions and green innovation. For many students, the experience is as emotionally uplifting as it is academically enriching.
A DEEP DIVE INTO PASSION
AND PURPOSE
Another powerful example of York’s experiential approach is the Distinguished Scholars Program, designed for high-achieving juniors and seniors who are eager to explore their passions on a deeper level. Through a selective application process, students choose a focus area—Arts, STEM, Global Studies, or Community Engagement—and embark on a personalized, mentor-guided journey that spans two years.
The program’s hallmark is a capstone project that challenges students to synthesize their learning and create something original, whether it’s a scientific innovation, a policy proposal, a community initiative, or a creative performance. More than just an academic distinction, the program empowers students to take intellectual risks, pursue independent research, and develop real-world skills.
This year, a robust field trip schedule has exposed students to innovation within many different fields. Some examples include attending the United Nations Association International Film Festival, visiting JAS Family Farms in Hollister for an immersive combination of workshops and expert-led discussions, and exploring cutting-edge technology at Google headquarters.
By requiring participants to go beyond the standard graduation requirements, the Distinguished Scholars Program exemplifies York’s belief that excellence is not just about achievement, but about initiative, curiosity, and a growth mindset. Graduates of the program are recognized at commencement and leave with a transcript and resume that reflect both academic rigor and authentic engagement.
FROM THE SUNNY HILLTOP
TO THE BIG APPLE
Few school experiences rival the exhilaration of standing on one of the world’s most iconic stages, and each February, York students have that rare opportunity. As part of Manhattan Concert Productions’ (MCP) Broadway Series, York’s choir travels to New York City to perform in David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center.
Each performance features a full professional cast and orchestra, and a chorus of 300 students from across the country—including the York choir, which has also enjoyed high profile performances in places like Disneyland, both the Santa Barbara Mission and Carmel Mission Basilica, and Carindale Stadium for the Monterey Bay FC Union games.
This once-in-a-lifetime experiential offering for students began in 2024 with MCP’s concert of Children of Eden by Stephen Schwartz, and continued this year with Anastasia, by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. The York Falcons have already been invited back to perform in the 2026 production of Jane Eyre.
In-between rehearsals, additional activities are scheduled into the trip, including attending other Broadway shows, visiting institutions such as the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and the Museum of Broadway, and exploring iconic sights like the Stonewall National Monument and Rockefeller Center.
In preparation, students rehearse after school for months, mastering complex musical scores and submitting recorded auditions to MCP for approval. Upon arrival, the intensive rehearsals make for an extraordinary experience not only due to the grandeur of the performance, but the genuine collaboration with the Broadway cast and crew. For students, it’s a profound moment of artistic achievement and a tangible example of what’s possible when hard work meets opportunity.
