NEIGHBORHOOD GUIDE: Monterey
Monterey is a vibrant coastal city where history and marine life meet. Families can stroll the Path of History past adobe landmarks, watch sea lions at Fisherman’s Wharf, or spend a day at the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. With kid-favorites like Dennis the Menace Playground, the Coastal Recreation Trail, and wide sandy beaches, Monterey offers a perfect blend of education and fun in a walkable seaside setting.

MEET YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD INSIDER: BELINDA HOWARD

My husband, Brett, and I first met in the CSUMB dorms while earning our bachelor’s degrees in Marine Science. After gaining experience elsewhere, we returned to Monterey to put down roots and were married in Memory Garden in 2019. Brett now teaches chemistry and marine biology at Marina High School, and I worked at the Monterey Bay Aquarium before becoming a full-time mom. We’re a new family of four—our sons Oliver (2) and Lincoln (3 months) keep us busy, curious, and constantly exploring. Everyone tells us these early years go fast, so we’re embracing every adventure in this beautiful city.
BELINDA’S PICKS
FAMILY FUN: Our family loves walking the loop around Lake El Estero, watching geese wander by and families cruising across the water in the iconic swan paddle boats. With the beach just across the street, it’s easy to pair a lake walk with a quick trip to the sand. The area also offers a large playground, an enclosed dog park, and nearby baseball fields where you can often catch a local softball game.
Another favorite outing is the Monterey Farmers Market on Alvarado Street. It’s the largest and most diverse market on the peninsula, with local produce, artisan vendors, and an impressive selection of food trucks. We love that it takes place in the evening—perfect for picking up fresh ingredients and staying for dinner while enjoying some of the best people-watching in town.
FAMILY-FRIENDLY DINING: Dust Bowl Brewing Co. is our go-to for a relaxed meal with little ones. The lively outdoor setting means a toddler squeal blends right in, and the cornhole boards keep kids entertained. We love the view of the bike path, the fire pits, and the onsite Wedo’s Taco Truck—their fish and carnitas tacos are always a hit, and it’s the spot our out-of-town friends request again and again.
Alta Bakery is another family favorite. Their drinks and pastries are exceptional, and the outdoor garden patio offers plenty of room for kids to explore.
DATE NIGHT: For an evening out, we often head to the Golden State Theatre for concerts, comedy shows, and special events at accessible prices. When we want a low-key night, we sneak away for the warm, decadent bread pudding at Kona in the Del Monte Center or enjoy a handcrafted cocktail with a view at the rooftop bar at Hotel 1110. Tipsy Putt is another fun option, combining playful décor, great bar food, creative drinks, and mini golf—a date night that feels nostalgic and lighthearted.
SHOPPING: Fleurs de Soleil is our top spot for thoughtfully curated gifts and gorgeous bouquets—the kind of place where you can always find something special.
At El Estero Car Wash, the friendly, hardworking team delivers quick and thorough service. They offer specialty detailing by appointment, and online coupons make regular cleanings easy and affordable.
Ad Astra on Alvarado Street is our stop for exceptional oat milk chai lattes and some of the best bread and pastries on the peninsula.
For clothing and accessories, Bliss Boutique offers feminine pieces perfect for treating yourself or gifting to close friends.
And when I need a reliable manicure, Love Nail & Spa consistently delivers excellent shaping and attention to detail with little to no wait.
PARKS: Via Paraiso Park is tucked inside a residential neighborhood, making it a peaceful retreat even during peak tourist season. It features two playgrounds, pickleball courts, basketball courts, a baseball field, and plenty of picnic tables ideal for birthday parties and gatherings.
Whispering Pines Park is another local favorite—quiet, spacious, and perfect for group outings with its long grassy field and shaded tables. The Monterey Recreation team has been wonderful to work with for reserving spaces for our sons’ birthday parties.
At Veterans Memorial Park, families enjoy a sweeping lawn, a playground with an ocean view, and first-come, first-served campsites.
And on rainy days, we head to MY Museum or Rising Star Gymnastics, which offers toddler open play and class options.
LAST WORDS: For local moms, I can’t recommend S.L.A.M. Monterey (Sweat Like A Mother) enough. It’s a supportive, energetic fitness community where kids are always welcome—workouts take place at Lincoln Park in East Garrison, creating a space for moms to connect, move, and recharge.
Finally, Monterey has so many amazing places to eat that I have to mention a few more:
- El Charrito – the closest I’ve found to my grandmother’s homemade flour tortillas.
- Rosine’s – legendary cakes big enough to share with the whole table.
- Troia’s Market – reliably great deli sandwiches.
- Heirloom Pizza – deep dish that rivals Chicago.
- First Awakenings – pancakes the size of your face (in the best way!).
