MPUSD Upcycled Prom Closet Returns to Help Students Shine on Prom Night
The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District (MPUSD) is bringing back its Upcycled Prom Closet event, ensuring that all students have the chance to attend prom in style—without the financial burden. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Oldemeyer Center, 986 Hilby Avenue, Seaside, CA.
Open to students from Marina High School, Monterey High School, Seaside High School, and guests from Central Coast High School, the Upcycled Prom Closet provides free prom dresses, suits, and accessories. This initiative is designed to make prom accessible to every student, ensuring they feel confident and celebrated on their special night.
Beyond attire, MPUSD will also hold a free raffle during the event, featuring community-donated items that can help offset additional prom expenses. “We are committed to providing equitable opportunities for all students,” said Board of Education Member Maiaika Velazquez, who launched this initiative in 2024. “The Upcycled Prom Closet is about more than just clothing—it’s about inclusion, confidence, and making cherished memories.”
Making Prom Affordable & Sustainable
Prom can be expensive, with costs for tickets, attire, and preparations like hair, nails, and accessories quickly adding up. The Upcycled Prom Closet helps alleviate these costs while also promoting sustainability. By repurposing formal wear, MPUSD supports California’s Responsible Textile Recovery Act of 2024 (SB 707), reducing textile waste and encouraging students to maximize value through upcycling and smart spending.
How You Can Help: Donations Needed!
To make this event a success, MPUSD is seeking community support through donations:
- New or gently used prom dresses, suits, tuxedos, and accessories (handbags, shoes, ties, etc.)
- Monetary contributions to help purchase suits or tuxedo rentals
- Gift cards or store credit from local clothing stores for student shopping
- Gift certificates from dry cleaners, restaurants, florists, nail and hair salons to help students cover additional prom costs (dinner, corsages, styling, etc.)
