SOMETIMES, YOU JUST NEED TO PACK UP THE CAR, HIT THE ROAD, AND ESCAPE THE EVERYDAY. For our family, there’s no better place to do just that than Shelter Cove—a hidden gem nestled on California’s Lost Coast. It’s not the easiest destination to reach, but trust me, the reward is worth every twist and turn. My adventurous aunt introduced the Cove to us many years ago. If you ask my kids to list their favorite places, it will be at the top of the list, as it holds a special spot in their hearts. Visiting has become a cherished family tradition, one we return to year after year.

WHY DO THEY CALL IT THE LOST COAST?
California’s iconic Highway 1 hugs the coastline from the south all the way to the north—except for a 72-mile stretch so rugged, so remote, that engineers had no choice but to detour inland. This is the Lost Coast. Imagine redwood-covered peaks towering into the clouds, then plunging thousands of feet to meet black-sand beaches and wild Pacific surf.
Tucked within this dramatic landscape is the tiny town of Shelter Cove, where life moves a little slower and the ocean is the heartbeat of the community. Here, our family reconnects—with nature, with each other, and with ourselves.
EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS
Nature Trail: The locals have built a beautiful trail that starts at the famous cypress tree along the water and heads into the redwoods, showcasing the area’s native plants. We’ve walked it countless times—marveling at wildflowers in the spring, mushrooms in the fall, and the serenity all year round.
Kings Peak: If your family is up for a real adventure, drive (only in a high-clearance vehicle) to the trailhead for Kings Peak. The hike is steep, but the payoff is stunning: a 360-degree view of coastal mountains, with the Pacific on one side and, on the other, Mount Shasta in the distance.
Lost Coast Trail: Experienced hikers dream of the 24-mile Lost Coast Trail, where you trek right along the shoreline and camp on remote beaches. This trail requires careful tide planning and is best left to the most prepared.
OCEAN ADVENTURES
Shelter Cove Beach: While most of the ocean around Shelter Cove is too rough for swimming, there is one spot for the brave souls willing to jump into the cold waters of the Pacific. Shelter Cove is named for this calm, protected cove perfect for a splash. Many wear wetsuits and attempt boogie boarding when the tide is right. My kids swear they had jellyfish encircling them with a leopard shark thrown in! Although I am suspicious of this tale, don’t let your guard down. This is a rugged ocean.
Beachcombing: While the kids like to swim, I usually prefer beachcombing. We’ve found everything from smooth sea glass to the occasional leopard shark washed ashore.
Tide Pooling at Cape Mendocino Lighthouse: One of our favorite family activities is tide pooling near the historic lighthouse. Time it right, and you’ll spot abalones, sea stars, and even the occasional octopus! My aunt created a scavenger hunt game for the kids, turning each tide pool visit into an exciting treasure hunt. There are many seals in the area; do keep a watch, as we almost always walk up to a seal that has washed ashore!
TASTY TREATS
Food is part of the fun, and Shelter Cove offers some delicious eats.
Shelter Cove RV Campground and Deli: This is my kids’ top pick—they love riding the golf cart down for popcorn shrimp and fish and chips.
Delgada Pizza and Bakery: Pizza, fresh-baked goodies, and ice cream? Yes, please. You cannot go wrong at Delgada! They are located in the Inn of the Lost Coast and have a beautiful mural of a whale, octopus, and jellyfish on the building.
Gyppo Ale Mill: My personal favorite. This laid-back spot serves up delicious pub food, craft beers, and a view of the ocean that’s hard to beat. Gyppo’s acts as a hub for the community and features live music most weekend nights during the high season.
The Coffee Spot (that turns into a wine bar!): We have a morning tradition started by my aunt. When we head to the Coffee Spot to enjoy locally made pastries with coffee perched on a cliff, we always walk by Seal Rock. Seal Rock is aptly named as it is always covered in seals, so we count them! To date, 32 is our highest count, but we keep trying for more. And in the afternoon, the same spot becomes a cozy wine bar with games for the whole family.
MAKE THE DRIVE PART OF THE ADVENTURE
This road trip isn’t just about the destination—there’s fun to be had along the way! Here are a few stops that we try to visit each trip:
- Glass Beach (Fort Bragg): A beach covered in colorful sea glass
- Confusion Hill: A quirky redwood mystery spot
- Legend of Bigfoot: A touristy but delightful shop full of unique treasures
LET THE LOST COAST FIND YOU
Shelter Cove isn’t for families looking to stay busy—it’s for those ready to slow down, soak in nature, and spend time together. These trips have become part of our family’s story, weaving lasting memories with every visit. If you’re ready to trade hustle for heart and rediscover the joy of the journey, head north.
