Susan Meister, Feature Writer

Susan Meister, a native of Detroit, was educated at Barnard College and Columbia University Graduate school, New York City. She began her career as an organizer of international symposia for the world's largest medical foundation focused on major developments in medicine, based in New York and Amsterdam. Later she founded her own organization which specialized in new technologies in medicine that enhanced patient safety, healthcare economics, and patient comfort, and which in many instances changed the practice of medicine in a number of disciplines. Since arriving in the Monterey Peninsula twelve years ago, she returned to her journalism roots as a columnist for the Monterey Herald, a contributor to the Monterey County Weekly,and as a feature writer for Monterey Bay Parent. She led the County-wide campaign for a safe gun storage law in California, which passed in 2022. She is now leading a County-wide effort to promote media literacy first among high school students, and then expanding the initiative to all age groups.

Her guiding principle for her professional life was written by the late Barbara Ehrenreich: "I have never seen a conflict between journalism and activism: As a journalist, I search for the truth. But as a moral person, I am obliged to do something about it."

Susan has been honored by Parenting Media Association with several awards for excellent writing.
