It's raining, it's pouring . . . and the kids are whining! What do you do when it's frightful outside and you're tired of being inside? Here are nine ideas to get you started on a day that goes from "I'm bored" to "ready for a nap" in just a few hours!
- Get the family to a museum. Yes, it's going to be crowded because everyone else has the same idea but you'll be dry, the kids will have lots of other kids to play with, and you'll have some adult company. For a more detailed look at the area museums, click here.
- Library Events. There is almost always a storytime or other event at local libraries. And, even if there isn't a scheduled activity, it's fun to wander the stacks, find a good book, and listen to the drum of rain on the roof. Click here for local library events for February.
- Get creative. There are several "paint your own" studios in the area. Give one a call and see if they have open time today. if not, gather your art supplies and throw your own. if you're adventurous, call a friend and invite him/her and their children over for a real party. You supply the creativity, your friend supplies the pizza! For more info on painting studios, click here.
- Plan your spring garden. Even if you're going to be limited to a few pots on your balcony, growing things is fun for kids. Curl up on the couch and do a little research while you make plans for the coming spring. Click here for some tips to get you started.
- Help the kids put on a play. For children who are a little older, creating and producing a play can keep them occupied for hours. Help them get started with a few ideas on what to perform and then let their creativity take over. If they seem to really get into it, perhaps a theatre class is in their future? - Get on the road. San Jose is only an hour away. if you're really bored, get in the car and head to the Children's Museum or The Tech Museum in San Jose. Both offer hours of interactive fun. For more info, click here.
- Model "down time" for your family. Parents don't always take time to care for themselves and a rainy day is a perfect time to show your children that a little downtime is good for everyone. Take a long bubble bath, curl up with a cup of tea and a good book, or take a nap and encourage them to find a way to just kick back and relax. For self-care ideas, click here.
- Indoor play. For little ones, head to an indoor play area to run off some energy. Play Palace PG is a new indoor play area for children located on Cannery Row in the American Tin Cannery Building. It's best for under 5's but even older siblings may enjoy it. It's reasonably priced at $6 admission/$5 military admission with ID. For more info, click here.
