Monterey Peninsula College will be bursting with school spirit, cheers, and inspiration on Friday, May 9, 2025, as nearly 1,000 student athletes from across Monterey County gather for the Special Olympics Northern California Schools Partnership Program Track & Field Day. This year’s event is not only a celebration of athleticism and inclusion—it’s record-breaking.
For the first time since before the pandemic, the event returns to the Monterey Peninsula College Track & Field Complex, and participation has doubled from last year’s total. Students from elementary, middle, and high schools, along with adult transition programs, will take part in a full day of unified competition—joining their general education peer partners in a variety of events including:
- Sprints and distance runs
- Wheelchair races
- Throwing and jumping contests
Cheered on by classmates, teachers, family members, and local volunteers, the athletes will showcase not just their physical talents, but their teamwork, resilience, and joy in participation.
“This inspiring day showcases the power of unified sports, bringing together students of all abilities to build teamwork, confidence, and lasting memories,” said Katie Rivera, Assistant Superintendent of Special Education for the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District.
The Special Olympics Schools Partnership Program promotes inclusion through sports by pairing students with and without disabilities in competitive, supportive environments—proving that athletics can be a powerful tool for breaking down barriers.
