Summer is a time for adventure, exploration, and unforgettable memories, and the City of Monterey’s Parks and Recreation Department offers an array of summer camps that promise all this and more. Whether your child is a budding athlete, a young scientist, or simply looking to make new friends in a fun and safe environment, you’ll find a camp that meets your child’s interests and needs.
A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE
With over 70 years of experience in offering enriching summer programs, City of Parks and Monterey Recreation Department has established itself as a cornerstone of summer fun in the community. “Our programs are inclusive and create a true sense of community for our participants in a fun and safe setting,” says Shannon Leon, Recreation Manager. “Our amazing staff truly love coming to work each day and creating memories and experiences that our campers will never forget.”
The variety of programs ensures that every child can find something that excites them. Traditional camps include Whispering Pines Day Camp (ages 5–9), Camp Quien Sabe Youth Overnight Camp (ages 7–15), Summer Fun Playground Program (ages 5–10), and Tiny Tots Summer Camp (ages 3–5). Specialty camps include everything from LEGO® engineering and art to gymnastics, beach volleyball, flag football, and dance. The Monterey Sports Center also offers a Sports Camp, Leaders in Training program, and summer swim lessons.
A BALANCE OF PLAY AND LEARNING
Each camp is designed to promote teamwork, leadership, and social development. “Campers learn about teamwork and how to work together and problem-solve in a collaborative and fun setting,” explains Rachel Deis, Recreation Coordinator. “They also develop confidence and social skills by working together, presenting informational reports, and harnessing their creative abilities through performing songs and skits.”
Many camps incorporate educational components, such as STEM-based LEGO® activities, arts and crafts, and environmental education. Whispering Pines Day Camp and Camp Quien Sabe strongly emphasize outdoor education, allowing children to connect with nature while learning about environmental stewardship.

DEDICATED STAFF AND SAFE ENVIRONMENTS
Monterey Recreation places the utmost importance on safety and inclusivity. Staff members undergo comprehensive training, including CPR/First Aid/AED certification, safety training for heat illnesses, emergency procedures for children with medical needs, and conflict resolution skills. Camper-to-counselor ratios range from 8:1 to no more than 12:1 to ensure individualized attention and care.
ACCESSIBLE AND AFFORDABLE PROGRAMS
Understanding many families’ financial constraints, Monterey Recreation offers scholarships (Camperships) for programs like the Summer Fun Playground Program, Camp Quien Sabe, and Whispering Pines Day Camp. Additionally, many camps offer half-day and full-day options to accommodate working parents.
MAKING A LASTING IMPACT
The City of Monterey’s summer camps don’t just provide seasonal fun—they also inspire future careers and lifelong friendships. Six of the current full-time staff members were participants in Monterey Recreation and the Monterey Sports Center summer programming. Other former campers have served as Monterey Parks and Recreation Commissioners, police officers, and firefighters.
Parents frequently express gratitude for their children’s enriching experiences at these camps. Sara Reid, Recreation Coordinator shares, “Parents know that not only are their kids safe at our programs, but they are having a blast and making new friends! Parents know that their kids will be engaged in fun and educational activities all day and come home excited to talk about their day and share their camp stories!”
