National Night Out is a nationwide community-building campaign held on the first Tuesday in August, designed to strengthen the partnerships between neighbors and their local law enforcement agencies while fostering safer, more caring neighborhoods. First introduced in August 1984 by Matt Peskin of the National Association of Town Watch, the inaugural event involved 2.5 million residents across 400 communities in 23 states. Since then, National Night Out has grown to engage over 38 million people in more than 16,000 communities each year.
By bringing police officers, firefighters, and residents together in a relaxed, festive setting, National Night Out enhances mutual trust and understanding, laying the groundwork for collaborative crime prevention.
