IN-PERSON EVENT: Bookshop welcomes back local author and Distinguished Professor of Earth & Planetary Sciences at UC Santa Cruz Gary Griggs. Griggs will be discussing his new release, The Ominous Ocean, which seeks to provide a better understanding of the perilous seas, so that we will be better prepared before taking that swim or venturing off to places unknown.
The oceans cover 71% of the planet and pose a myriad of hazards to everyone from blue-water sailors to the casual beachcomber. From rip currents to rogue waves, the possibilities for some water-borne calamity seem endless, but in most cases a deadly outcome can be avoided or at least mitigated by having a better understanding of the risks involved.
Gary Griggs is a Distinguished Professor of Earth & Planetary Sciences at the University of California Santa Cruz. He received his B.A. in Geological Sciences from UC Santa Barbara and a Ph.D. in Oceanography from Oregon State University. Gary served as the Director of the University’s Institute of Marine Sciences for 26 years, where he led the development of a Coastal Science Campus. In 1998 he was given the Outstanding Physical and Biological Sciences Faculty Award at U.C. Santa Cruz. The California Coastal Commission and Sunset Magazine named him one of California’s Coastal Heroes in 2009, and in 2010 he was elected to the California Academy of Sciences. Gary chaired a committee in 2017 recommended by Governor Brown, and in 2016 he was appointed to the California Ocean Science Trust.
Gary has written 13 books including Living with the Changing California Coast, Introduction to California’s Beaches and Coast, and The California Coast from the Air.
