Monterey County Fair | September 1–5
The perfect place to see a true snapshot of Monterey life, culture, and history, the annual Monterey County Fair features a carnival, entertainment and exhibit competitions. Enjoy amusements for all ages, such as the Cliff Hanger, Zipper and Haunted house, as well as performances by dancers, theatre troupes and other local talent. Festa Italia | September 9–11
This free event is the perfect way to sample cuisine and take in local Italian culture. Taking place at the Custom House Plaza, the event honors Monterey’s deep roots in industrial fishing through food, music and entertainment. Sample one of hundreds of authentic dishes while you enjoy live music ranging from traditional Italian music to modern favorites. Info is available at festaitaliamonterey.org.
Santa Cruz County Fair | September 14–18
An annual tradition for over 100 years, come experience carnival rides, magicians, animal acts, pet shows and so much more including the fan favorite tractor parade. 61st Annual Sandcastle Contest | September 17
A fun tradition between the American Institute of Architects and the city of Carmel, this year’s contest will take place on the beach south of 10th Avenue. Who will win this year’s Golden Shovel? This year’s theme will be released soon! Those interested in participating can find out more information at 831-620-2020. Building begins at 8:00 a.m. with judging taking place at noon.
Monterey Greek Festival | September 23–25
Join the fun at the free traditional Monterey Greek Festival. Munch on delicious authentic food while watching traditional dances. A taverna will also open in the evening, serving Greek and American beer, wine and ouzo. Check oldmonterey.org for event info.
65th Monterey Jazz Festival | September 23–25
After sampling some of the delicious cuisine at the Greek festival, do your ears a favor and head over to the Monterey Jazz Festival at the Monterey County Fairgrounds. Four stages and hundreds of artists will appear during the three-day event, with some of the biggest names in jazz set to appear. Flavors of Pacific Grove | September 29
One of the wonderful Monterey events in September includes this fun and charitable event at the Pacific Grove Gold Club House. Each year there are over 120 donations auctioned off that include golf packages, accommodations, trips, and restaurant certificates, among others. In addition to the auction, there are a number of the best chefs that work in Pacific Grove participating as well as live entertainment.
