A fun activity for the entire family in the days leading up to January 1 is to make a time capsule for 2022. It could also be a great way to spend New Year's Eve as you count down to the new year. Parents and kids can gather small items and mementos that represent the year, place them in a decorated box or container, and then put the box away until next year.
SUPPLIES:
- Start by choosing a container. A sturdy box will do–just choose something that can be decorated since that's half the fun.
- Art supplies like glue sticks, markers, stickers, glitter (if you're brave enough), washi tape, paint, and old magazines and newspapers from 2022
- Small plastic sandwich bags
STEP ONE: Decorate your time capsule. Let the kids take the lead here but you'll want to be sure that the year is written prominently on the box.
STEP TWO: Gather the things you want to put in the time capsule. Some ideas:
- Photos of the family. Try to include holiday, vacation, birthday, and first day of school pictures.
- School artwork, report cards
- An outgrown item of clothing
- Movie stubs, tickets, or playbills from special events you attended (make copies if the originals are keepsakes)
- A letter from each family member with details on their favorite and least favorite moments of the year
- A wish from each member for the new year
STEP THREE: Put items in plastic bags to protect them in case the box gets damaged, then fill up your box. This is the perfect time to reflect on the year, read over individual lists, and share why you're including each item.
It's also time for a little celebration so bring out the cookies and hot cocoa. And, don't forget to take photos of each step in the process for next year's box!
STEP FOUR: Seal the box tightly and decide where you'll store it. Pick a place where it won't be disturbed–perhaps with the holiday decorations?
That's it! Next year (or several years from now) you can gather as a family, open the box and enjoy reminiscing about 2022.
