You’re attracted to the smaller class sizes and state-of-the-art facilities that private schools offer. But how do you know which one is the right fit for your child? Following these five tips can simplify the process.
1. Research the School’s Accomplishments
Look on the school’s website for evidence of academic excellence. Check to see if the latest technology programs are offered, and perhaps they have an award-winning arts program as well. School awards and individual student achievements will be prominently displayed on the website. Although your child may be starting as a pre-schooler, look ahead to the future and evaluate how well the school prepares students for college. Test scores and lists of colleges attended by graduating students are important to consider.
2. Observe the School Environment
Just as important as a school’s test scores are its environment. Attend open houses and pay attention to how the administrators present the school’s goals. Take advantage of opportunities to visit classrooms to see the school in action. Observe how teachers interact with students, and see if the students are actively involved in the lessons. If your child is invited to spend some time in a classroom, be sure to get her feedback about the experience. If possible, attend a PTA meeting to learn more about school policies and the ins and outs of the school. You may also learn about the level of family participation and volunteer opportunities.
3. Network and Ask Questions
Other parents can provide a wealth of information about the school, especially if their children are in attendance there. Whether a neighbor or a parent you meet at an open house, ask questions about their students’ experiences. Also, ask school administrators about how they address different learning styles and behavior issues. If your child had a learning difference and received an IEP, or individualized educational program, at another school, find out how he will be evaluated and what kind of accommodations will be made for his learning needs. By the same token, if you have a gifted child, discover ways in which the school can cultivate and advance individual talents and interests.
4. Evaluate Your Priorities
Once you find a private school that you like, decide how well it meets your family’s needs. One thing to consider may be how far the school is from your home. If bus service isn’t available, you may be your child’s ride throughout her school years. Many families also evaluate the financial commitment involved in sending a child to private school. Some families receive scholarships to offset tuition costs, while others make a substantial financial investment. This can equate to 13 years if the student attends the private school from pre-kindergarten through grade twelve.

The decision of where your child attends school is an important one. The school’s academic profile, ambiance, and your family’s needs are essential to consider.
